Students may apply for a position as a Safety Patrol in grades 6-8.  Safety Patrols make a public vow to protect the safety of all students and set the bar high as an example for their peers.  Safety patrols assist faculty and staff with morning arrival, afternoon dismissal, raising and lowering of the flag, as well as supervising younger students during Tuesday morning whole-school assemblies. 

Students are sorted into one of four houses during their first year in middle school.  Named for the four Cardinal Virtues: Prudence, Temperance, Justice and Fortitude, each house is comprised of sixth, seventh and eighth grade students and their faculty advisors. Not only do houses offer opportunities for comradery and friendly competition, regular House Days are planned and put on by seventh and eighth grade House Leaders. Students must apply for this position, meet regularly, and divide responsibilities needed to make each House Day a success. Past House Day themes have included a leprechaun trap contest, "Save the Eagle" escape rooms, a Family Feud game show, field game Olympics,  a Christmas cookie decorating contest, and many more! 

Student ambassadors share the light of SJE with all those who walk through our doors!  Seventh and eighth grade ambassadors greet visitors, give tours and offer a unique student perspective to any newcomers who have questions needing helpful answers. Students spend many after school hours in training, learning the history of the school, information of interest to potential families as well as general knowledge for the distinguished visitor.  If you visit us at Open House, your tour will be student-led, complete with polite conversation, friendly eye contact and a genuine smile!

At SJE peer tutors begin a friendship that can last a lifetime.  Carefully paired together, middle school students can offer a helping hand to elementary students needing homework help and the encouragement of someone who has "been there before."  Once the connection has been made, younger students love to see their new friend in the hallway or get a quick high-five on the way to recess.  Middle school students not only gain confidence in sharing the subject matter content, but experience firsthand what it feels like to make a difference in the life of another person.
