A day in the life of an SJE student looks different at every level. Whether you're in Pre-K or 8th grade, however, some things remain true: you will be challenged to think in new ways, supported to take academic risks, and engaged in hands-on learning.
School Day FAQs
What time does school begin and end each day?
Morning Extended School Program (ESP) begins at 6:50 a.m. each morning and ends at 7:40 a.m. Students report to their classrooms between 7:40 and 8:00 a.m. School begins with Morning Announcements at 8:00 a.m.
School ends at 3:15 p.m. each day, except for Wednesdays (2:30 p.m. dismissal) and designated noon dismissal days. At dismissal time, ESP is also available until 6:00 p.m.
What subjects do students learn?
All students at SJE participate in daily instruction of the following Core Subjects: Mathematics, Reading/Literature, Language Arts, Religion, Social Studies, and Science. Students in Pre-K through 8th grades also receive weekly instruction in the following Special Area Subjects: Visual Arts, Music, Technology/STEM, Physical Education/Health, Spanish, and Library.
When do students eat lunch?
Lunch times are as follows: Pre-K (10:45-11:15), Kindergarten/4th/5th (11:45-12:15), 1st/2nd/3rd (11:15-11:45), 6th/7th/8th (12:25-12:50). Students are welcome to bring lunch from home or are invited to purchase lunch from our hot food vendor.
Which classes have Recess?
All students have time for Recess daily, even our Middle School students! Our outdoor area includes 3 separate areas with playground equipment, a full-sized soccer field, a recently refinished basketball court, and a 4-square court. Students are welcome to use these areas as they are age-appropriate.
Do students ever take field trips?
Classes take field trips throughout the year to sites around the Atlanta area that provide opportunities for them to apply and broaden their classroom learning! Some classes walk to community centers in the Hapeville area, such as a trip to the Hapeville Fire Department or a river clean up at Cofield Park. Others go far and wide in their learning, from the Tellus Science Museum and the Atlanta History Center to the Legacy Theatre and the Center for Civil and Human Rights.
